Keynote Presentation: Heart Centered Teaching in a Data Driven World
How can we balance heart centered teaching in a data driven world?  If data is in the driver’s seat, heart centered teaching is the motor that makes the data move forward.  It’s evident that data is driving educational policy and decision making; however, research tells us that teachers matter, relationships matter, and classroom culture impacts student success.  Yet, scores, data, and impersonal technology continue to be an incredibly powerful influence in and out of the classroom. How can we make the impersonal personal and leverage powerful human connections to help grow more than data, to help grow relationships with our students? Heart centered teaching in a data driven, technology driven world is a challenge we must rise to meet.

Exploring the World Through Virtual Reality
Remember a time when we thought Virtual Reality was something that would happen in the future? Well that future is now. Gone are the days where we thought it would cost millions of dollars and computers the size of a room to transport us into the virtual realm. Now it only costs a few bucks and a cell phone. We will take a look at several tools (Such as Google Cardboard), apps (Such as Expeditions and CoSpace), and websites (such as RoundMe) that we as educators can use to take our students to places they never thought they could go before. We will also look at some other technology that is making its way into schools to make virtual learning even more hands on.

Reading Is Dreaming With Eyes Wide Open!
Tom Byelick - tbyelick@amplify.com
Will your third grade students be reading to at least grade level this year?  Data suggests some significant fall-out if this is not the case.  For example:
  • One in six children who are not reading proficiently in third grade do not graduate from high school on time, a rate four times greater than that for proficient readers.
  • The rates are highest for the low, below-basic readers: 23 percent of these children drop out or fail to finish high school on time, compared to 9 percent of children with basic reading skills and 4 percent of proficient readers.
  • The below-basic readers account for a third of the sample but three-fifths of the students who do not graduate.
Many schools and school districts are turning to Amplify for help in putting students on the path to reading success...and future successes as well! Amplify Reading is an amazing digital tool which helps struggling readers and helps proficient readers to grow even more!  Join us for a look!!

Wondering how to effectively use the students devices in your classroom? Now that they have the devices in their hands, how do we integrate them into our curriculum? Walk away from this session having learned about 20 different apps/programs that you can use with your students on their iPads. We will discuss the apps that we are using and an activity that we had our students complete using the app. When you leave at the end of this session you will have ideas that you can go back and utilize in your own classroom tomorrow. We will be using both free and paid apps that are available for the iPad as we are an iPad district.
