Keynote Presentation: Heart Centered Teaching in a Data Driven World
How can we balance heart centered teaching in a data driven world?  If data is in the driver’s seat, heart centered teaching is the motor that makes the data move forward.  It’s evident that data is driving educational policy and decision making; however, research tells us that teachers matter, relationships matter, and classroom culture impacts student success.  Yet, scores, data, and impersonal technology continue to be an incredibly powerful influence in and out of the classroom. How can we make the impersonal personal and leverage powerful human connections to help grow more than data, to help grow relationships with our students? Heart centered teaching in a data driven, technology driven world is a challenge we must rise to meet.

Exploring the World Through Virtual Reality
Remember a time when we thought Virtual Reality was something that would happen in the future? Well that future is now. Gone are the days where we thought it would cost millions of dollars and computers the size of a room to transport us into the virtual realm. Now it only costs a few bucks and a cell phone. We will take a look at several tools (Such as Google Cardboard), apps (Such as Expeditions and CoSpace), and websites (such as RoundMe) that we as educators can use to take our students to places they never thought they could go before. We will also look at some other technology that is making its way into schools to make virtual learning even more hands on.

5 minute rapid-fire, 20-slide presentations:
1) LocatED is a free service for teachers, instructional coaches, administrators, librarians, and many more that makes it easy to connect and share so innovation can take root and grow in our schools.
2) CANCELED: From Hour of Code to informational fluency, we try to teach our students the value of becoming technologically literate. What do we really teach them about being safe? How do students learn to protect their identity and data? In this spark session, we will take a look at aspects of security, from cyber to physical, that could be incorporated in our curriculums.
3) Going 1:1 with technology is the goal...and getting there with 30,000 students, staff and families is the part of the job. This presentation sets the stage for how the ARTEC Grant is helping the large community of Waukegan go 1:1 with professional development, parent engagement and personalized learning tools and apps that develop a new environment for learning.
4) Support parents who don't think they can help with "this new homework." Take these quick digital tools back today to schools today, and provide directly to families of students who may be struggling in the classroom.
5) 21st century administrators are called upon to perform an increasing number of complex and time-consuming tasks. A Whitney M. Young Magnet High School administrator has created several customized web applications that increase efficiencies in student/teacher scheduling, mass communication, teacher observation documentation/scheduling, and the collection of school fees and purchases.
6) Whatever the topic may be, we have all enjoyed a Meme here or there. Irony, imagery, critical thinking are just a few ways Memes can be used in education. Come learn where to find them, how to create your own using Google Drawings, and engage your students.
7) SIT Conference.
8) Over the past few years Virtual Reality (VR) has grown in popularity in schools due to Google Cardboard.  But the question is where do we go from here? Lets take a look at where VR is going, how to make students consumers of VR content, and more importantly creators.  And we will hit on the most important question of all, WHY should be we using VR in the classroom.

We provide mini sessions monthly at our high school known as "Spark Sessions". We present information and support teachers. Our presentation will further explain our professional development model and goals.
